ICHIHARA, Japan - Photo shows a helicopter which crashed into a rice field after hitting power lines in Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, on July 5. Masanobu Araki, 37, who was flying the helicopter to spray agricultural chemicals, injured his left leg.

Title:  1st int'l 'shogi' tournament games starts
The two-day first international amateur ''shogi''(Japanese chess) championship tournament game began in downtown Tokyo on June 19, with 32 participants from 27 countries, including the United States, Israel and the Philippines. The competitors are playing on the chessboard used for shogi. On the sidelines, eight computers produced by companies in Japan, North Korea and elsewhere will compete in a computerized shogi tournament.

Title:  2 Koreas fail to begin vice-ministerial talks
South Korea's Vice Unification Minister Yang Young Shik, who heads a South Korean delegation at the vice-ministerial talks with North Korea, meets the press in Beijing on June 21 after officials of the two countries failed to begin the talks the same day in the Chinese capital. The North Korean delegation was quoted as saying it would attend the talks only after it confirmed the arrival of 100,000 tons of fertilizer. The South had promised to deliver to North Korea by June 20.

Photo shows a 70-meter-high broadcasting tower at the University of the Air in Chiba's Mihama Ward where three 17-year-old high school students climbed on June 28 and draped a banner from the top.
