HIRATSUKA, Japan - An annual star festival called 'tanabata matsuri' is held in Hiratsuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, on July 7. The city southwest of Tokyo is famous for the crowd-drawing festival. Tanabata is observed on July 7, or, in some locales, Aug. 7. Its celebration originated from a Chinese folk legend concerning two stars - the Weaver Star and the Cowherd Star - who were said to be lovers but could meet only once a year on July 7.

Called Honda Integrated Motor Assist System, it is a compact 1-liter lean burn VTEC gasoline engine combined with an electric motor. Honda claimed that using the new technologies it has achieved the world's lowest fuel consumption for a mass-produced gasoline-powered vehicle -- 35 kilometers per liter (22 miles per gallon).

The first crested ibis bred in captivity in Japan is one month old on June 21. Officials at the ibis conservation center in Sadogashima Island, Niigata Prefecture, said the bird should be able to fly in about 10 days. The baby crested ibis, hatched from an egg laid by an bird donated by China, tips the scale at 1.3 kilograms on June 21, almost the same weight as Yang Yang, its mother, which weighs 1.36 kg.
