China has recently opened for the first time to foreign journalists its former base for producing nuclear devices. The photo, taken on June 22, shows the base in the Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai Province, western China. The devices produced there were exploded in 16 nuclear tests conducted by China.

A silver goblet presented in 1928 to a national association of student skiers by Prince Chichibu, the deceased brother of the late Emperor Hirohito (posthumously called Emperor Showa) was returned to Japan more than 50 years after its whereabouts became unknown. George H. Lynch (L), a U.S. citizen who purchased the goblet in February at an Internet auction without knowing its origin, hands it to Tatsuji Miya (R), president of the ski association, in a ceremony at a Tokyo hotel June 25.

A human-shaped robot dances by imitating the movements of a researcher of the Kawato Dynamic Brain project team in Seika, Kyoto Prefecuture, on June 24. This is a file photo of Empress Michiko's father, Hidesaburo Shoda, who died at a Tokyo hospital June 18. He was 95. Shoda, who was honorary chairman and adviser of Nissin Flour Milling Co., had been hospitalized for a year. Emperor Akihito and the empress visited him June 16. The photo was taken in 1981.
