Japan's top sprinter Koji Ito (C) unofficially becomes the first Asian to crack the 10-second barrier for the 100 meters on June 16 when he was timed with a stopwatch at 9.9 seconds at a track meet in Hiratsuka, Kanagawa Prefecture. Ito, who bagged three gold medals at the Asian Games in Bangkok in December, was competing as a guest in a collegiate meet. The record will not stand because the Japan Amateur Athletic Federation does not recognize times measured with nonelectronic equipment.
