The Okayama District Court ordered Kawasaki Steel Corp. on Monday to pay 52 million yen in damages to the bereaved family of an employee who they say killed himself due to overworking. Presiding Judge Takeo Hamamoto at the court's Kurashiki branch accepted the plaintiffs' claim that Junichi Watanabe, then 41, employee at Kawasaki Steel's Mizushima ironworks, suffered depression and committed suicide June 20, 1991, after long work hours. (Ms. Watanabe, the wife of the victim is entering the Okayama District Court on February 23, 1998 )
