Title:  New ''Nozomi'' bullet train model unveiled
A new ''Nozomi'' Shinkansen bullet train model is unveiled at JR Tokyo station Feb. 10. The new model, jointly developed by Central Japan Railway Co. and West Japan Railway Co., will make its debut March 13 on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen Lines. The prototype of the Nozomi, which means hope in Japanese, was completed in October 1997. The new model has a maximum speed of 285 kilometers per hour, up 15 kph from the current Nozomi trains.==Kyodo

Chiyotaikai, newly promoted to ozeki after capturing his first Emperor's Cup in the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament, joins in an annual bean-throwing ceremony Wednesday Feb. 3 at Shinshoji temple in Narita, Chiba Prefecture, to wish for good luck and good health throughout the year. The bean-throwing rite, or ''mamemaki'' in Japanese, is observed each year on either Feb. 3 or 4 at temples and shrines across the country.==Kyodo

Ozeki Chiyotaikai joins a campaign against drug smuggling at Narita airport east of Tokyo on Feb. 5, together with his stable master Kokonoe. The National Hockey League's (NHL) Calgary Flames beat the San Jose Sharks 5-3 on Sunday Oct. 11 in the second of two games at Tokyo's Yoyogi Stadium. The season opening Oct. 10 game, played before a crowd of 8,400, ended in a 3-3 tie. Sunday's game featured the first NHL hat-trick in Japan -- Flames' star Theoren Fleury (R) scored three goals and got two assists. NHL season openers debuted in Japan last year.

Nobu SHIRASE (1861-1946) Explorer of the Antarctic. Inspired by Robert Falcon Scott's expedition to the South Pole, Shirase embarked with 26 men aboard the 204-ton "Kainan maru" in 1910. In his second try he succeeded in landing on the Antarctic continent from the Ross Sea in January 1912 and reached the point of 80'50' south latitude and 157'37 west longitude, which he named Yamato Yukihara (The Yamato Snow Field).
