Kinkakuji - (The Temple of the Golden Pavilion) Temple
in Kita Ward, Kyoto, belonging to the Shokokuji branch of the
Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. The third Muromachi shogun ,
Ashikaga Yoshimitsu (1369-95) ordered to build Kitayama-dono (
Kitayama Palace). After Yoshimitsu's death in 1408, the Kitayama-
dono was converted into a temple and given the name of Rokuonji,
later known as Kinkakuji. The Kinkaku was completely destroyed by
arson in 1950. An exact reproduction of the building was
completed in 1955.
